There are currently around 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. This is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040 (Alzheimer’s Society). However, dementia has a great impact on carers and care workers as well (watch a stark depiction in this video). This has been pulled into sharp focus over the last 18 months where, due to the pandemic, many carers have been isolated with limited access to resources.
Manchester Camerata has been pioneering music-based dementia therapy for the last 12 years with our award-winning Music In Mind programme. When the pandemic hit, we created an online training version of our programme designed to provide vital support to both people living with dementia and their carers during the pandemic. Through our online resources and weekly zoom calls, we provided a network of support for carers during the pandemic.
Throughout Dementia Action Week, we will be highlighting some of the fantastic successes our Music In Mind programme has had on its journey so far. You will hear from carers talking about the support it’s given them, how music can be used as an alternative to medicine, and also how we work with global research leaders in dementia to shape our Music in Mind programme.
